The US Dollar firmed against many of its peers including Sterling due to the release of worse-than-forecast construction data out of the UK.
Against the Euro and other currencies the ‘Greenback’ fell after the latest Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Index for consumer sentiment tumbled. Sentiment fell to 75.2 in October, down from the 77.5 recorded in September; the figure is the weakest recorded in nine-months.
The sentiment gauges fall was being blamed on the ongoing federal government shutdown; however the size of the decrease was limited due to rising optimism about inflation and income.
“Consumer confidence posted a surprisingly small decline in early October despite widespread awareness of the government shutdown. The muted response may be due to consumers giving progressively less credence to the economic scare tactics that have framed the debates over the past few years. This can quickly change however if the impasse continues” said survey director Richard Curtin.
The US currency spent most of Friday’s session firmer against its peers after hopes grew that the impasse over the rapidly approaching October 17th deadline for raising the debt ceiling will end as investors believe that politicians in Whitehouse would not be foolish enough to allow the world’s largest economy to default on its debt commitments.
