After fairly static trading between 2010 and 2011, the Pound Sterling to South African Rand (GBP/ZAR) exchange rate rallied from 10.38 Rand to a high of 18.23 Rand in early 2014.

As an emerging-market currency, the Rand tends to depreciate in times of volatility and the GBP/ZAR pairing was able to record notable gains during the serious South African mining strikes in both 2013 and 2014. High levels of domestic unemployment and inflation concerns have also piled pressure on the South African Rand since the onset of the global economic crisis in 2008.
