President Barack Obama has won a second term in the White House prevailing over his bitter rival Mitt Romney in a closely fought election battle and the world breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Obama is the first Democratic President since Franklin Roosevelt to win a second term in office marking an historic night for the USA. He narrowly defeated Republican nominee Mitt Romney in a close fought campaign, he just beat Romney in the popular vote but swept the board by claiming the crucial swing states of Colorado, Virginia and Ohio.
The election marked the rejection of Romney’s economic policies of slashing taxes and shrinking government and a time of economic hardship, the voters instead chose to put their faith in Obama to continue to turn things around.
At his victory speech in Chicago Obama told cheering supporters; “Our economy is recovering, a decade of war is ending, a long campaign is now over. You’ve made me a better president, and with your stories and your struggles, I return to the White House more determined and more inspired than ever about the work there is to do. We have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America the best is yet to come.”
Most voters said that their main concerns were over the nation’s economy and saw it getting worse before it got better. Obama’s ability to relate to the common man however overrode those concerns and his handling of the Super storm Hurricane Sandy did a lot to boost that image.
The latest economic data out of the USA has suggested that the world’s biggest economy is on the right track to a slow but steady recovery and Obama was no doubt helped by the sense of optimism beginning to creep its way into the public consciousness. Consumer sentiment has improved, job creation has improved and gas prices have begun to fall sharply across most regions of the country. With the countries unemployment rate hovering just above the 7.9% mark, Obama is the first President to win re-election since Ronald Reagan with an unemployment level above 6%.
Obama also gained from voters giving him credit for saving the US motoring industry in 2009 and for ordering the mission that resulted in the killing of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011.
His next challenge will be to ensure that the US economy remains on course for a strong recovery.
