News from both home and overseas ensured that the Canadian Dollar took losses this afternoon, sliding against some of its most traded counterparts. As Canadian markets opened the ‘Loonie’ declined initially in response to the much anticipated news from the Japanese central bank.
The Bank of Japan announced its intention to conduct open-ended asset purchases from 2014, and this later than expected start pushed the commodity-driven Canadian currency down 1.1 percent against the Japanese Yen and slightly lower against its American counterpart.
Upward ‘Loonie’ movement was also tempered by a report which showed that Canadian retail sales slowed in November. Although retail sales rose, the modest 0.2 per cent gain was 0.3 per cent less than the increase recorded in October.
